Just When Apple Season Are At A Peak, A Listeria Contamination Has Been Detected

Traverse City, Michigan- The Traverse City produce company, ‘North Bay Produce’ is proactive and voluntarily issuing a recall of apples.

The recall consists of 2,297 cases and two bulk bins of their apples. The company says they are aware of a ‘possible’ contamination of listeria present in the apples.

The apple variety that subject to recall are, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Red Delicious, Jonamac, McIntosh, Jonathan.

Consumers are being asked to beware that North Bay Produce distributes their apples under different brand names. The apples in question were packaged in plastic bags and sold under these brand names, North Bay Produce, Pure Michigan, Great Lakes.

There are also apples that were packaged in clear plastic bags, tote bags, white paper tote bags. There are also apples that were sold on display trays at various retailers in the region and in other states as well.

The Affected Apples With Listeria Are Ones That Were Shipped Between October 16 To October 21

North Bay Produce said through a representative, that any apples shipped before October 16, are not affected by the recall and considered safe.

The apples that are at risk were shipped from North Bay Produce between October 16th to October 21 to various retailers, brokers, and wholesalers in Michigan, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

North Bay Produce said that only the apple products listed and the ship dates provided are at risk, no other products are affected. The Listeria infection was detected during a routine quality control tests said a source.

Listeria infections can be very serious in certain groups including young children, pregnant women, and anyone with a compromised immune system.

There are cases where the symptoms do not show up in early stages. However symptoms such as a severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are symptoms of Listeria. Furthermore, people who have those symptoms should immediately seek medical attention.
